Frequently asked questions

Does BudgPal connect to my bank?

No, by design. BudgPal never asks for bank credentials and has no servers. You download a statement (CSV or PDF) from your bank yourself and import it. That's the whole privacy model: your data can't leak from a server that doesn't exist.

My bank's PDF statement won't import. What can I do?

Some bank PDFs use non-standard encoding. Try downloading the statement again, use your bank's "export as CSV" option instead (preferred, since it's more reliable), or add transactions manually with the + button. If a statement consistently fails, email it to support (redact anything sensitive) and we'll add support for that format.

How do I move my data to a new phone?

Export your .budgpal file (Home → share or export), send it to the new device (cloud drive, email to yourself, cable), then import it in the app. If the file already exists there, choose Replace to update it in place. Password-protected files stay encrypted in transit.

Can my partner and I share one budget?

Yes. That's what .budgpal files are for. Keep your shared budget in one password-protected file, share it to your partner's phone, and they open it with the password. When one of you updates it, share the file again and choose Replace on the other device to bring it up to date. One person edits at a time. Think of it as passing a shared ledger back and forth.

Do I need to press Save?

No. Your budget file auto-saves as you work. Exports and shares always contain your latest changes.

What do the little icons on transactions mean?

They tell you where money came from or what's attached: amber ↙ means you dipped into savings, red ↙ means a loan redraw, grey ⇄ is a planned holding-account transfer, the bell is a reminder, and ⟳ marks a recurring payment. The full legend is in the app under Help → Transaction icons & badges.

Is my data encrypted?

Yes. On Android the local database is encrypted at rest, and you can additionally protect the app with a PIN or biometric lock. Exported files can be password-protected, and without the password they cannot be opened, even by us.

What happens if I lose my file password?

Password-protected files can't be recovered without the password. That's what makes the protection real. The data on your device stays accessible in the app; only the exported file is locked. Export a fresh copy and choose a new password.

What does Premium include?

Premium is a one-off purchase (no subscription) that unlocks advanced features like scheduled payments & reminders, multiple budget periods, reports and exports. Importing, categorising and your current-month budget stay free.
